Three children on Tuesday drowned in a river in Egwugwu Agbaja community in Abakaliki local government area of Ebonyi State.
They had gone for a swim at the river after school.
According to a source, "When the first person jumped into the river and did not come out, the other two followed suit and never came out."
The fourth child who went with them refused to jump with them into the river and when he waited for a while without seeing the three who jumped in, he raised an alarm which attracted the attention of villagers.
But all attempts to rescue them proved futile as they were later found dead in the river.
The victims are Kingsley Nwenyi (12yrs) and Obinna Nwenyi (6yrs) who are said to be brothers while the third victim is Somtochukwu Ogbonna (11yrs), the last child in his family of four children.
Two of the deceased were in primary 6 while one was in primary 3 at Egugwu Agbaja Primary school.
They had started their second term examinations the same day they drowned.
Police spokesman, ASP Chris Anyanwu, though he confirmed the incident said he was yet to receive full investigative report on the incident.
