Gay and transgender people in Jamaica are forced out of their homes, face assaults and legal prosecution, as the majority of Jamaicans say homosexuality is immoral.
Recently, Jamaica has been witnessing an upsurge in homo- and transphobic attacks, with homosexual males facing up to 10 years in prison under a state buggery law.
Although the country's Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller had previously promised to review the law, she declared it was not the "priority" agenda for the country upon taking office. Also, a year ago, the police announced the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are risking criminal abuse no more than any other group, seemingly ignoring the boost of homophobic hate crimes.
According to a recent survey, 85% of Jamaicans have said homosexuality is immoral. Responding to a question of a nespaper in March 2013,the majority of Jamaican parents said they would disown or try to cure a gay child.
Notably, one father mused upon what he would do if his daughter was a lesbian: "As long as she is happy, I wouldn't kill her, but if I have a son who is gay, that is different."
According to a new documentary report, homosexuals and transgenders of Jamaica flee from their houses fearing the violence against them. "Krissy," who has been attacked repeatedly for being openly gay and trans, is forced to live in old storm drain with a group of gay and transgender friends in filthy, crowded conditions - and with constant threats of evictions by the local authorities.
