On Monday, May 12, dozens of women’s rights activists of the Senegalese capital Dakar staged protest over the abducted Chibok girls.
Members of over 20 organisations gathered near the Nigerian embassy in Dakar but they were stopped by police after less than an hour as the protest had not been authorised. However, two protesters were allowed into the embassy to submit a letter of protest.
According to Fatou Kine Camara of the Association of Senegalese Lawyers, who was surrounded by around 50 women, mostly dressed in red, they wanted to show their solidarity and indignation and add their voices to the unanimous denunciation.
Islamist group Boko Haram abducted about 276 girls on April 14 from the northeastern town of Chibok, in Borno state. Currently, about 223 schoolgirls remain missing.
Earlier today, the group released a new video claiming to show the schoolgirls whom they had converted to Islam. Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau stated that they wouldn't release the girls until all militant prisoners were freed.
