<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Goals of Research Methodology</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">1.Plan and Undertake Research Projects</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">2.Deal with research challenges in a systematic manner that follows certain protocols or standards which are acceptable in an academic scholarly community</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-size: large;">3. Understand and interpret scholarship and research reports when you read them, identifying their major elements and underlying methodologies</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b></div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Definition of RE-search</span></b><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">A systematic and organised form of continuous attention applied to a field of knowledge, undertaken to establish facts, relations, principles and theories</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Continuous attention – prefix “re” implies returning to study</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Systematic and Organised – the scientific method</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Establishing facts – description</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Establishing relations – explanation and correlation</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Establishing principles and theories – exploration and discovery</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Types of Research</span></b><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Descriptive Research: </span></b><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Giving a systematic and organised description of what exists. Facts organised in a classified form to give a clear picture of a subject.</span><br />
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Explanatory: </span></b></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">This deals with understanding the cause and effect of related factors.  Relations that are not very clear, which the researcher wants to explain.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Co-relational research: </span></b></div>
<div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">In this case the distinct factors are clear and the researcher wants to understand how one factor affects the other. </span></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Exploratory research (Establishment of theories): </span></b></div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">It begins with situations that the researcher does not know enough about.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">It produces broad generalities </span></div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Characteristics of Research</span></b></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>Controlled </b></i>– set up controls or quantify effects</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>Rigorous </b></i>– follow relevant procedures</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>Systematic</b></i> – follow logical sequences, necessary and sufficient conditions</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>Valid and Verifiable </b></i>– universally repeatable</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>Empirical </b></i>– conclusions based on sensory inputs</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>Critical </b></i>– all procedures can be questioned</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Functions of Research</span></b></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><i>Pure:</i> </b>seeking knowledge without thought of application – e.g. science</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><i>Applied:</i></b> seeking knowledge which can be applied to achieve a certain goal e.g. Technology</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><i><b>Practical: </b></i>seeking knowledge of dynamic action in process of application e.g. Engineering.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Modes of Knowledge in Research (Epistemology -  The philosophy of knowing)</span></b><br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Intuitive: </b>belief, faith, hunches, feelings – building hypothesis</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Authoritative: </b>based on established sources or authorities – academic literature</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Logical: </b>exercise of induction and deduction reasoning from findings to conclusions</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b></b></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Empirical: </b>based on objective facts established through sensory observations –procedures leading to findings.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Research Paradigms</span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b> Positivism: </b>Reality is restricted to observable data; it can be quantitative or qualitative.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-weight: bold;"> Post-positivism: </span>Combining empirical observations with logical reasoning – science as probabilistic (qualitative, ethnographic, ecological, naturalistic approaches)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;"> Post-positivism: </span></b></div>
<div>
<b><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Subjectivist: </b>world as subjective construction</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Critical Realist: </b>world as objective reality but available only through progressive (increasingly plausible) interpretations</span></div>
</div>

<strong><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Ingredients for Isi Ewu</span></strong></div>
<ul style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 22px;">
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">1 Goat Head</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">15 cl (150ml) Red Palm Oil</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">2 teaspoons ground Ehu seeds (Calabash Nutmeg)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">1 tablespoon powdered edible potash (Akanwu/Kaun/Keun)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">2 big beef flavoured stock cubes</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">2 medium onions</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">About 10 Utazi leaves (Gongronema latifolium)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">2 habanero peppers (or to your taste)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Salt (to taste)</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 22px; margin-top: 12px;">
<strong><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">To garnish the Isi Ewu</span></strong></div>
<ul style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 22px;">
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">1 onion</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">About 10 Utazi leaves (Gongronema latifolium)</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 22px; margin-top: 12px;">
<strong><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Before you make the Isi Ewu</span></strong></div>
<ol style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 22px;">
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Cut the goat head into pieces making sure that the essential parts: ears, tongue etc are whole cuts that is, they are not cut into pieces.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Remove the brain and put in an aluminium foil bag then fold the bag to close just like with Nigerian Moi Moi.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Wash the meat very well with foam and iron sponges where necessary, using a knife to scrape off the tough top skin especially on the tongue. There will also be traces of sooth from burning the fur off the goat, ensure that these are all cleaned.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Put the powdered potash into a bowl. Add a small quantity of water (about 4 table spoons) and stir well. Pass it through a fine sieve and set the liquid aside.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Cut the 2 onions into 4 big chunks.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Crack and remove the outer shell of the ehu then grind with a dry mill eg coffee grinder.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Pound the pepper with a mortar and set aside.</span></li>
</ol>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 22px; margin-top: 12px;">
<strong><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Directions for making Isi Ewu</span></strong></div>
<ol style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 22px;">
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Cook the goat head with the chunks of onion, the stock cubes and as little water as possible. Top up the water as necessary but make sure there is as little water as possible in the pot. This is because we do not want any stock in the pot when the meat is done. Remember to cook the brain too.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">While the meat is cooking, slice the onion for garnishing into thin rings.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Cut half of the utazi into thin slices. Cut the other half into tiny pieces. The first will be used for garnishing while the latter will be added into the palm oil paste.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">When the meat is done, remove the chunks of onion, take out the brain and mash it up till smooth.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Add salt, stir and cook till all the water has dried.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Set the meat aside to cool down.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Now, pour the palm oil into a clean dry pot.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Pour in the potash mixture (sieved) into the oil.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Stir with a wooden spatula as you pour the potash. You'll notice the palm oil begin to curdle and turn yellow. Keep stiring till all the oil has turned yellow. Use as little potash as possible because too much of it can upset your stomach.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Add the pepper, mashed brain, ehu seeds and the utazi that has been cut to tiny pieces. Stir very well till they are all incorporated.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Add the goat head to the palm oil paste and stir very well with a wooden spatula.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Put it back on the stove/cooker and heat till the Isi Ewu is piping hot.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Serve the Isi Ewu in a wooden mortar as shown in the image above.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Garnish with the thin slices of utazi and onion rings for the full effects.</span></li>
</ol>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; line-height: 22px; margin-top: 12px;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Best served with chilled drinks: palm wine, beer or stout and soft drinks.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The email came through. You’ve been accepted into the college of your dreams — or at least the reach school you were hoping for. But here’s the rub: It’s not offering enough financial aid. What now?</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-right: 125px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Expensive schools that aren’t offering students much financial aid could leave parents with over $100,000 in parent loan debt after four years of college;<span style="color: #555555;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">Federal Parent PLUS Loans</span></span> amounts are only capped by the full cost of attendance minus other financial aid, grants and scholarships.</span></div>
<div class="asset article_body_ad rec_ad ad_normal" id="article_container_0_rec" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; clear: right; float: right; line-height: 20px; margin: 10px 0px 30px 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div id="google_ads_iframe_/7175/fdc.forbes/article-new_1__container__" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0pt none; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><iframe frameborder="0" height="250" id="google_ads_iframe_/7175/fdc.forbes/article-new_1" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" name="google_ads_iframe_/7175/fdc.forbes/article-new_1" scrolling="no" style="background-color: transparent; border-width: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 15px; max-width: 100%; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: bottom;" width="300"></iframe></span></div>

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-right: 125px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The cost of attendance for a school can include room and board, textbooks, personal expenses and transportation. If a school’s cost of attendance is $40,000 and the student qualifies for $5,000 in scholarships and grants and borrows $5,500, Parents can still borrow $29,500 per year. If $40,000 seems high, think again: <span style="color: #555555;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">NYU’s undergraduate 2014/2015 cost of attendance</span></span> for students living on campus can run over $60,000. Parents also pay nearly double the interest rate their kids do on their federal student loans.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-right: 125px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">The answer isn’t for students to skip college or to always avoid attending their dream school. Instead, make smart choices as a family, before and after applying.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-right: 125px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Before applying</span></strong></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-right: 125px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Consider a school’s history of awarding grants and scholarships and weigh it against tuition. While not perfect, the Department of <span style="color: #555555;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">Education</span></span> has mandated schools add net price calculators to their websites. A net price calculator provides an estimate of what a student could expect in aid based on grades and family finances. However, it’s not an exact science, and the university could have just received a large donation that funds additional scholarships and grants.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-right: 125px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">When families are reviewing costs via net price calculators of the schools their children are applying to, they should make sure they’re comparing costs evenly by doing simple calculations of bottom dollar figures. Subtract grants and scholarships from the total cost. Then subtract student loans that the student is borrowing. This is the number that either you or your son or daughter could have to come up with. This is the only number that really matters.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-right: 125px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Then the student (repeat, the student) should call schools and ask if more scholarships or grant money is expected in the coming year. Also, he or she should ask about scholarships within departments housing the students’ intended majors.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-right: 125px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<strong style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">After acceptance</span></strong></div>
<div class="asset article_body_ad loge_ad ad_normal" id="article_container_0_loge" style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; clear: right; float: right; line-height: 20px; margin: 10px 0px 30px 30px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div id="google_ads_iframe_/7175/fdc.forbes/article-new_3__container__" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0pt none; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><iframe frameborder="0" height="250" id="google_ads_iframe_/7175/fdc.forbes/article-new_3" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" name="google_ads_iframe_/7175/fdc.forbes/article-new_3" scrolling="no" style="background-color: transparent; border-width: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 15px; max-width: 100%; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: bottom;" width="300"></iframe></span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-right: 125px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Ask for more financial aid. It can’t hurt. For students who have grades above the school’s average, always call and ask to see if the financial aid package can be boosted up a notch. Also fill out special circumstances forms if either a parent’s or a student’s income has dropped. Financial aid sometimes is increased because of a change in income.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-right: 125px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;"><span style="color: #555555;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">Next</span></span> , really think about the value of that particular school’s education. Students need to call career services departments and find out where graduates are employed and what their entry level salaries are. They also need to talk to professors who will teach their freshmen level courses to determine if the school is a good fit for them. Unfortunately, too many college orientations focus on campus tours instead of visits to financial aid, career services and professors’ offices.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-right: 125px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">More importantly, how sure is your student of his or her career path? In<i style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="color: #555555;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box;">CliffsNotes Graduation Debt</span></span></i>, one of the case studies I mentioned was a couple who accumulated $300,000 in debt by going to private law school–but one chose a public service career. Their combined income was about $70,000. As a result, they regretted the private law school choice. The extra tuition wasn’t worth it, but it might have been if both choice corporate law careers. If a student is only choosing an expensive school because of a particular program, career path is the most important factor.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-right: 125px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">But what about students borrowing private student loans with parents cosigning? Being a cosigner on a loan is the same thing as borrowing it yourself. The parent is still exposed to missed payment reporting on their credit report and is liable for the loan. However, in the case of student loans there is a tax deduction available for interest paid that is only available to the main borrower.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 24px; margin-bottom: 18px; margin-right: 125px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: large;">Bottom line: The heartbreak involved in rejecting admission to a student’s dream school is huge, but the bigger heartbreak is when parents can’t retire and the students are saddled with so much private loan debt they feel weighed down by a 30-year burden.  Make smart decisions now when applying for and accepting college admission. It’s for the best interest of everyone’s future.</span></div>

Yes, all 8 - from Brown to Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Penn, Cornell, Dartmouth and Columbia, all holding a spot for the violist and aspiring physician from William Floyd High School, Long Island.<br />This feat is extremely rare, as most top students do not apply to all colleges and even if they did, the acceptance rate into these schools are less than 10%. <span style="font-size: large;">One of the UK's great global competitive strengths is in education, which contributes around £10bn a year in export earnings.<br />Which is useful at a time when the gap between our earnings from the rest of the world, and what we pay to the rest of the world, has been widening.<br />So it may be mildly concerning that the number of overseas entrants to British higher education declined in 2012-13 - which is the first numerical fall in 29 years (back in 1983-1984, there were fewer than 50,000 foreigners registered in full-time education in English universities, compared with more than 300,000 today).<br />Between 2010-11 and 2012-13, there was a fall of 1000 - or 1% - in the number of international entrants to full-time post-graduate programmes, compared with double-digit annual growth for years and years.<br />The change is statistically significant.<br />
“</span><span style="display: block; margin: 0px 0px 5px; text-indent: -5000px;"><span style="font-size: large;">Start Quote</span></span><span style="font-size: large;">The structure of UK courses makes English universities particularly vulnerable to further falls in overseas enrolment in the near term”<br />What's gone wrong?<br />Well, according to a study by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, students from the rest of the EU have been put off by the rise in tuition fees, while those from outside the EU, especially Indians and Pakistanis, have been deterred by new visa rules.<br />The changes in the flows of students from different countries are striking.<br />There was a 9% fall in enrolments for undergraduate courses from Nigeria, an 11% fall from Pakistan, a 13% drop from India and a 15% decline from Saudi Arabia.<br />For post-graduate courses, the biggest declines were 39% for Iran, 26% for India, and 20% for Pakistan.<br />The question is whether the UK is warding off security threats and future claims on the welfare state, by repelling students from these countries, or whether we are undermining entente with tomorrow's foreign leaders and simultaneously depriving ourselves of jolly useful earnings from abroad.<br />And to reinforce the idea that these trends are not trivial, entrants to English universities from India and Pakistan have halved since 2010 - while entrants from the rest of the EU to undergraduate courses in England fell by almost a quarter in the past academic year.<br />Here is what is perhaps particularly troubling - the structure of UK courses makes English universities particularly vulnerable to further falls in overseas enrolment in the near term.<br />The relevant point is that English courses tend to be shorter than those at universities abroad - which means that just to keep numbers up, English universities have to find replacements for more than half of all overseas students every year, compared with just a third in Germany.<br />So if, for whatever reason, foreign students en masse decided England was not the place for them, there could be a sudden and painful financial shock for the English higher education system.<br />And as another illustration of why this matters, around three quarters of all entrants to postgraduate masters courses in 2012-2013 came from outside the UK - post-graduate departments in England are hugely dependent on foreign students and foreign earnings.<br />What is really striking is that one nation, China, is almost as important to the funding of post-graduate education in England as England itself.<br />A staggering 23% of all entrants to post-graduate masters courses in 2012-2013 came from China, compared with 26% from the UK.<br />And as enrolments from India and Pakistan declined, a remarkable 28,930 Chinese people enrolled last year for post-graduate courses in England, a rise of 9% (and the total numbers of new entrants exceed 30,000, if Hong Kong citizens are included).<br />Including undergraduates, the total number enrolling from China last year was not far off 50,000.<br />There are some post-graduate course utterly dominated by the Chinese - they represent 58% of all entrants for post-graduate maths, 56% for media studies (which is intriguing, given that China is not exactly famous for having a free press), 47% for business, 39% (predictably) for engineering, 37% for both chemistry and architecture, and 35% for the creative arts.<br />There are three ways to look at those Chinese stats.<br />They show that post-graduate English education is that rare thing - an industry winning an important share of the huge and growing Chinese market (so hooray).<br />Or they show that we are naively training Chinese people to eat our economic lunch, and further stunt our economic growth in years to come.<br />Or we are training the enriching young Chinese how to enjoy a decadent life in the creative arts and media - and they'll soon lose their appetite for industrial warfare (big hooray).</span></blockquote>
